Containment / Airflow / Compliance

Laboratory Fume Hoods

Benchtop, floor-mounted / walk-in, polypropylene and special-purpose fume hoods, evaluated on containment, airflow and site integration rather than face velocity alone.

01 / Types

One family. Distinct duties.

Each configuration serves a different footprint, chemistry and workflow. Selection follows the actual application, not a single number.

01.1

Benchtop

Standard bench-mounted hoods for general wet chemistry and routine procedures on a worktop.

01.2

Floor-mounted / Walk-in

Full-height enclosures for tall apparatus, carts and large-scale setups requiring floor access.

01.3

Polypropylene (PP)

Corrosion-resistant PP construction for strong acids and alkalis, with heat and rigidity limits to consider.

01.4

Special-purpose

Application-specific enclosures configured around unusual chemistry, geometry or exhaust requirements.

02 / Performance

Beyond face velocity.

Containment is a system outcome. Face velocity is one input among many that must be balanced and verified.

P.01

Containment performance

How reliably contaminants are captured under real operating and cross-draft conditions.

P.02

Face velocity

Average inflow at the sash opening, evaluated with uniformity -- not as a standalone rating.

P.03

Sash

Sash type and position affect opening area, operator protection and energy use.

P.04

Liner

Interior liner material selected against the chemistry, temperature and contact time.

P.05

Exhaust airflow & static pressure

Volume and pressure must match the duct system, fan and building conditions.

P.06

Fan control

Constant-volume or VAV control with alarm and monitoring where the application requires it.

03 / Evidence

Test methods, stated plainly.

ASHRAE 110 and EN 14175 are test methods. They describe how containment is measured. They are not general product certifications and do not automatically cover every model or site.

Method reference

ASHRAE 110

Test method

A containment test procedure using tracer gas and airflow visualization. Results apply to the specific unit, configuration and conditions tested -- reported as measurements, not as a blanket certification.

Method reference

EN 14175

Test method

A European standard series covering type testing and on-site testing of fume cupboards. It defines test procedures for containment and airflow; reported results are scoped to the tested product and installation.

Site conditions

Performance is site-dependent

Room cross-drafts, make-up air, duct runs, fan capacity, static pressure and building controls all affect containment. Final commissioning and acceptance are completed at the project location by qualified local teams.

04 / Selection

A defined selection process.

Selection resolves into a documented set of decisions: chemistry, configuration, airflow, control and interfaces.

Step 01

Define application

Chemicals, concentration, temperature, apparatus size and workflow.

Step 02

Choose type & liner

Benchtop, walk-in or PP, matched to chemistry and available space.

Step 03

Size airflow & control

Exhaust volume, static pressure, fan and constant-volume or VAV control.

Step 04

Confirm & verify

Written confirmation, applicable standards and on-site testing at handover.
