Project Planning / Structured Approach
Laboratory Planning Guide
Organize your requirements before layout, design and quotation.
Prepare the room information, equipment schedule, utility conditions and project responsibilities needed for a clear laboratory enquiry.
Project preparation checklist
Prepare the information your laboratory project needs
Use this checklist to organize your enquiry. Mark information that is still pending and identify who will confirm it.
Project role & location
Identify the project owner, purchasing contact, design reviewer and local contractor. Provide the company name, project country, city and current project stage.
Room dimensions & access
Provide dimensioned plans with ceiling heights, columns, doors, windows and access routes. Mark existing services and confirm the measurements with your local team.
Laboratory use & workflow
Describe the laboratory purpose, planned activities, user numbers and the movement of samples, staff, equipment and waste.
Chemicals & process requirements
List the substances and processes involved, including relevant safety data sheets and storage requirements, for review by the project team.
Equipment schedule
List equipment names, quantities, models, dimensions, weights and manufacturer requirements. Mark equipment supplied by others.
Furniture & worktops
Identify bench layouts, storage needs and preferred materials. Describe the expected use and exposure conditions so material suitability can be reviewed.
Ventilation & extraction
Identify activities needing extraction, proposed fume hood locations and existing ventilation information. Confirm system design and site interfaces with the responsible local engineer.
Water, drainage, power & gases
Mark available connection points and provide utility information from the site team. List equipment connections and identify who will complete each interface.
Local standards & approvals
Provide the standards, approvals and documentation required for your project. Ask the customer or local engineer to confirm the applicable local requirements.
Scope & budget
Separate furniture, equipment, building work and installation responsibilities. Share a budget range if available and identify priorities and optional items.
Procurement & delivery schedule
Provide target dates for design approval, purchasing, delivery and site readiness. Identify dependencies that may affect the schedule.
Installation & site readiness
Confirm the installer, unloading arrangements, site access, storage and available utilities. Identify work to be completed before installation.
Acceptance & handover
Agree on inspection responsibilities, acceptance criteria and required records before ordering. Identify the team responsible for on-site testing and handover.
Confirm site information and local requirements
Room dimensions must be provided and confirmed by the customer or local contractor. Applicable local standards and regulations must also be provided and reviewed by the customer or local engineering team.
Record open questions and resolve conflicting information before approving drawings. Confirm materials, equipment interfaces and the latest drawing revision in writing before production.
Enquiry preparation
Assemble your project information
Keep related information together and use clear dates and revision numbers on drawings and schedules.
Company & project brief
Include your company, project role, location, laboratory type, contact details and expected procurement date.
Plans & equipment list
Include available sketches, PDF or CAD plans, site photographs and the equipment schedule. Identify measurements awaiting confirmation.
Requirements & open questions
Include furniture and utility requirements, local standards, installation scope and unresolved decisions.
